Pitripaksha Mela and Pind Daan

pitripaksha-gaya

Gaya is a holy place in the state of Bihar. People from all over the country gather in this place for the famous Pitrapaksha Mela or the ancestor worship symbolized in Shraddha ritual. It is the time for the Gayalis who are the descendents of Magga Brahmins who were transformed to Vaishnavism, to be prepared for the Vedic Shraddha ceremonies or the ‘Pinda Daan’. This is an obligatory Hindu rite which is supposed to bring salvation to the departed soul. In the early Dhrmashastras, it has been promulgated that the dead ancestors pray to God for a son who would offer Pinda or lymph of rice to them in Gaya.

Types of Pind Daan or Last Rites Ritual in Hindu Religion in India
There are elaborate last rites rituals performed while doing Pind daan in Hindu Religion in India. These pind daan or last rites rituals follow a set of processes pre-defined in several Hindu scriptures.

Here we mention some of the steps to be followed while performing pind daan in Hinduism in India.

Barsi ceremony or death anniversary in Hinduism
Barsi ceremony, or Varsi, among Hindus is an important ceremony after death. It is observed after a year in Hindu religion – it is the first death anniversary. It is also known as the first yearly Shradh and is performed exactly after a year.

Tithi or Rashi is followed for the Barsi date. The Rashi on which the person died is chosen by some communities. Some Hindu communities opt for the same Tithi.

Shradh is offered to the dead person on the day by family members. Some communities cook the food liked by the dead person on the day.

Today many people opt for Annadanam or food donation on Barsi after a simple Shradh puja.

In some communities especially in North India an elaborate feast is arranged during the occasion. Relatives and villagers participate in the feast.

Tripindi in Hindu Religion
The spirits of all deceased people who die an unnatural death due to accidents, suicides, murder or getting killed face difficulty in moving over to super natural world as their Atma cannot get Mukti from this materialistic world.

All obstacles in life turn into a smooth process by performing Pind Daan rituals with quick positive changes that are observed in life.

There are special shradh rituals for providing salvation/tarpan for souls of people who died unnatural deaths. These include:

Tirpindi Shradh:
Tirpindi Shradh is done for people having died unnaturally. This shradh helps in removing Preth Badha and removes all difficulties created by the ancestors/family members who died unnaturally.

Tripindi Sradha is also a provision if for continuous three years there is no offering made to our departed ancestors.

Naranyan Bali Shradh:
The shradh by the name of Narayan Bali is done for satisfying the wandering souls of ancestors and relatives. As an indication, ancestors come in the dreams of their family members. This shradh should also be done by people who have Pitra Dosh In their Kundli or Horoscope.

Naag Bali Shradh:
After death, the souls of the ancestors enter Naag Yoni and take shape of snakes or naags. The indication is coming of snakes in one’s dreams.
